RESUMEN

Migration is a critical aspect of ocean ecosystems, and understanding this phenomenon answers ecological and management questions. Given the difficulty in tracking ocean animals across large distances, the extent to which different ray species perform long-distance movements, such as migrations, remains unknown. This study used passive acoustic telemetry to track the movements of endemic diamond Gymnura natalensis and critically endangered duckbill Aetomylaeus bovinus rays along the South African coastline using a collaborative nationwide network of coastal acoustic receivers for up to 7 years. Duckbill rays were detected significantly more frequently than diamond rays, but both species moved between the south and east coasts of South Africa (traveling up to 1167 km). Tagged individuals were detected significantly more often in their tagging locations during summer months but traveled significantly further distances during winter months. Furthermore, movement models fitted to individual duckbill rays' annual net-squared displacement identified most individual annual movements as migratory. This evidence suggests that both diamond and duckbill rays make eastward winter migrations and return to specific areas along the coastline during the summer months. The exceptions to this were diamond rays tagged on the east coast that were not found to migrate seasonally, which supports previous research that there is intraspecific variability in migrations for ray species. These findings have implications for understanding ray migration not only on a global scale but also locally for spatial management interventions and population delineation.

RESUMEN

Movements of four adult giant trevally Caranx ignobilis were tracked using passive acoustic telemetry after being released from uShaka Sea World Aquarium in Durban, South Africa, where they had been kept on display for a period of 8 years. All four individuals were detected on a large network of deployed acoustic receivers for a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of over 6 years. Their movements were compared to 43 wild-caught and tagged C. ignobilis over a similar period and two individuals adopted movement behavior similar to that of their conspecifics, including repeated annual seasonal migrations to a known spawning aggregation site. This study shows that with good animal husbandry, indigenous fish kept in captivity can be released back into the wild and not only survive but adopt natural movement behavior and contribute to future generations of their species.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated patient-reported outcomes (PROs) for patients with high breast cancer risk undergoing elective risk reduction mastectomy and reconstruction. These patients incur operative risk in the absence of active cancer, which renders their treatment experience unique. This study aimed to identify longer-term quality of life (QoL) issues that persist in this patient cohort. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study assessed PROs in 48 women with high breast cancer risk who attended the Royal Melbourne Hospital Risk Management Clinic, at least 12 months post-mastectomy and reconstruction, with surgery between 2011 and 2020, using the BREAST-Q© Likert surveys. The BREAST-Q© internationally validated QoL instrument scales survey data from 0 (worst) to 100 (best) in 14 domains addressing satisfaction and psychosocial issues. RESULTS: There was higher overall breast and psychosocial satisfaction, with scores of 11 and four, respectively, yet lower chest, abdomen and sexual well-being scores with 14, three and four, respectively, in contrast to normative BREAST-Q© data from >1000 women without prior breast cancer or breast operations. High average scores >90 were found for patient satisfaction with surgical, medical and office staff. Twenty-one patients had an average score of 63 for satisfaction with breast implants, while 27 patients post-DIEP had average scores >72 for abdominal well-being, appearance and overall outcomes. Higher mean QoL outcomes were found with DIEP flap in all domains, compared with breast implant reconstruction. CONCLUSION: QoL assessment with PROs 12 months post-risk reduction mastectomy and reconstruction demonstrated higher psychosocial well-being, yet highlights physical implications, with patients experiencing reduced chest, abdomen and sexual well-being, compared with normative BREAST-Q© control data. Higher mean QoL outcomes were found with DIEP flap compared with breast implant reconstruction. PROs studies can identify unmet needs and facilitate change in service provision.

RESUMEN

Lethrinus nebulosus (Forsskl, 1775) is distributed throughout the Indian Ocean, Indonesia and the West-central Pacific. Given recent evidence suggesting two cryptic species of L. nebulosus in the southwestern Indian Ocean, we implemented a multispecies coalescent approach using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA loci and conducted Bayesian tests of species delimitation. One population extends from southern Mozambique to Kenya, and the other from northern KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) southwards, with a zone of overlap between them. This study confirms that the South African population can be identified as a separate species, previously identified as Lethrinus scoparius Gilchrist Thompson, 1908, and can be distinguished from L. nebulosus by live and fresh colouration and with genetic data, but not consistently by morphometric or meristic parameters, other than in preorbital length cf. head length. Lethrinus scoparius is resurrected and redescribed herein.

RESUMEN

Online evidence suggests that there has been an increase in interest of using unmanned aerial vehicles or drones during land-based marine recreational fishing. In the absence of reliable monitoring programs, this study used unconventional publicly available online monitoring methodologies to estimate the growing interest, global extent, catch composition and governance of this practice. Results indicated a 357% spike in interest during 2016 primarily in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. From an ecological perspective, many species targeted by drone fishers are vulnerable to overexploitation, while released fishes may experience heightened stress and mortality. From a social perspective, the ethics of drone fishing are being increasingly questioned by many recreational anglers and we forecast the potential for increased conflict with other beach users. In terms of governance, no resource use legislation specifically directed at recreational drone fishing was found. These findings suggest that drone fishing warrants prioritised research and management consideration.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The burden of treatment toxicities in breast cancer requires longitudinal assessment of patient-centered outcomes. The current study aimed to assess the feasibility of collecting general and breast cancer-specific quality of life (QoL), ongoing symptoms and unmet needs, in patients identified from a population-based cancer registry, and to assess the contribution of demographic, disease, and care-related factors. METHODS: Eligible patients were identified from the Victorian Cancer Registry (Victoria, Australia) using the ICD-10 code C50, diagnosed during 2013, 2011, and 2009. Data included age, area of residence, cancer diagnosis, date of diagnosis, treatment modality, and staging. Patients completed a number of validated tools including the EQ-5D-5L and FACT-B, symptom items, and unmet needs. RESULTS: Of 1006 eligible patients, the overall response rate was 45.6%. Survivors 1 year post-diagnosis had significantly greater problems with pain or discomfort (59.2%) and with anxiety or depression (51.3%) compared with survivors 5 years post-diagnosis (45.1% with pain or discomfort, p < 0.05, and 32.7% with anxiety or depression, p < 0.01). For the 5 years group, pain or discomfort and anxiety or depression were significantly higher than for the general population (32.2% and 21.6%, respectively). Improved quality of life was found in those who did not receive chemotherapy (coefficient = 0.2269, p = 0.0409) and those who did not have a longstanding health condition (coefficient = 0.6342, p < 0.001). Poorer quality of life was associated with those who were not certain what was happening with their breast cancer (coefficient = - 0.3674, p = 0.0094) and those whose cancer had not been treated, had been treated but was still present, or had returned after treatment (coefficient = - 0.5314, p = 0.0136). Across the total cohort, women were bothered by changes in weight (21.3%) and concerned about the effects of stress on their cancer (19.6%). Fear of cancer recurrence was commonly reported and did not diminish over time (60.7%, 52.2%, and 56.9% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively). CONCLUSION: Collecting patient-reported outcomes from a population-based sample of breast cancer survivors was feasible. Physical symptoms and psychosocial issues are common and are persistent. Use of chemotherapy was the only treatment modality that significantly impacted on QoL.

RESUMEN

Imaging of biological matter by using fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) is becoming a widespread method for in vitro imaging. However, currently there is no fluorescent NP that satisfies all necessary criteria for short-term in vivo imaging: biocompatibility, biodegradability, photostability, suitable wavelengths of absorbance and fluorescence that differ from tissue auto-fluorescence, and near infrared (NIR) emission. In this paper, we report on the photoluminescent properties of magnesium oxide (MgO) NPs that meet all these criteria. The optical defects, attributed to vanadium and chromium ion substitutional defects, emitting in the NIR, are observed at room temperature in NPs of commercial and in-house ball-milled MgO nanoparticles, respectively. As such, the NPs have been successfully integrated into cultured cells and photostable bright in vitro emission from NPs was recorded and analyzed. We expect that numerous biotechnological and medical applications will emerge as this nanomaterial satisfies all criteria for short-term in vivo imaging.

RESUMEN

As a result of the global decline of fish stocks, an increasing number of fish species are becoming targets of heavy exploitation, often concomitantly with a lack of biological knowledge on their structure and demographics. Here we present 11 new polymorphic microsatellite loci, isolated from the slinger sea bream (Chrysoblephus puniceus, Sparidae), a relatively recent target of coastal fisheries in eastern South Africa. Levels of genetic diversity were assessed in 39 individuals collected from the KwaZulu-Natal coast (Park Rynie, South Africa). Observed and expected heterozygosities varied between 0.39 and 0.97 and between 0.53 and 0.96, respectively. One locus (SL35) showed significant heterozygote deficiency and linkage disequilibrium was detected between SL35 and SL1. Importantly, five of these microsatellites cross-amplify in Cheimerius nufar, a sympatric species also subjected to exploitation.
